- Put the computer on a hard, flat surface like a desk. A bed, blanket or pillow blocks the air vents.
- Check that the vents, on the sides or underneath, aren't blocked.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, sort by CPU and close programs using a lot, like heavy browser tabs.
- Turn the computer off, unplug it and clean the vents with compressed air in short bursts.
- For a laptop, a stand or cooling pad lifts it and improves airflow.
- Update Windows and drivers. Sometimes an update fixes a fan that runs too hard.
MacOn a Mac: open Activity Monitor (search with Cmd + Space), sort by % CPU and quit what's using the most.
Important: If the computer shuts off by itself from heat, or there's a burning smell, stop using it and see a professional. Internal cleaning and new thermal paste require opening the computer.
Quick questions
How hot is too hot?
A laptop can get warm under heavy use. If it's hard to keep your hand on it, it slows down badly or shuts off by itself, it's too hot.
Can I clean the fan with a vacuum?
Better not. A vacuum creates static electricity that can damage components. Use compressed air with the computer off.
