How to move photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC

There are two simple ways: with a cable, or through iCloud. A cable is faster for lots of photos.

  1. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a cable. The iPhone asks Trust This Computer?, tap Trust and enter your passcode.
  2. On the computer open the Windows Photos app and click Import → From a connected device.
  3. Pick the photos you want, or all of them, and click Import. They're saved in the computer's Pictures folder.
  4. To get regular JPG files that open everywhere: on the iPhone, Settings → Photos → at the bottom Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic.
  5. Without a cable: install iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store, sign in with your Apple ID and turn on Photos. They'll appear in File Explorer.
MacOn a Mac: connect the iPhone, open the Photos app and pick the iPhone in the sidebar. Or just send the photos with AirDrop.
Important: Before deleting photos from the iPhone, open a few on the computer and check they were saved properly. If iCloud is syncing, deleting on the phone also deletes in the cloud.

Quick questions

What is HEIC and why won't the photos open?

HEIC is Apple's space-saving format. Some Windows programs can't open it. The `Automatic` setting on the iPhone converts photos to JPG during the transfer.

The computer doesn't see the iPhone. What do I do?

Unlock the iPhone and tap `Trust`, try another cable and USB port, and install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store.
