- Test your speed on a site like fast.com or speedtest.net. Do one test next to the router and one where the internet is slow.
- If it's fast near the router and slow far from it, the problem is coverage. Move the router to a central, high spot, not inside a cabinet or next to a microwave.
- Restart the router: turn it off, wait 30 seconds and turn it on.
- If the router broadcasts two networks, for example one with 5G in the name, use it when you're nearby. It's faster.
- Check how many devices are busy at once, like downloads, TV or games. They all share the same speed.
- If the speed is much lower than what you pay for even next to the router, contact your internet provider.
Important: In a large home or one with thick walls, one router may not be enough. A Mesh system, several units that spread Wi‑Fi through the home, solves this better than cheap range extenders.
Quick questions
What speed is enough for a home?
For a family that streams and works from home, 100 to 200 Mbps is usually enough. More important is that Wi‑Fi reaches every room well.
Why is it fast by cable and slow on Wi‑Fi?
A cable connection isn't affected by walls, distance and other devices. If the cable speed is good, the problem is the Wi‑Fi, not the provider.
